Enemy

Denis Villeneuve? Check.
Jake Gyllenhaal? Check.
A24? Check.

By all accounts I should have loved this movie, but unfortunately I found myself merely liking it.

I blame myself, mostly. I’ll admit I had no idea what was going on. Sure the cinematography is amazing, the score is incredible, Gyllenhaal’s performances are top-notch… but I was thoroughly confused.

After researching the movie a bit, I began to put the pieces together. It’s not that I had missed them the first time, it’s that I didn’t know what puzzle I was working on. Enemy is like trying to put together a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle in the dark.

Once I realized what was going on and what this film is truly portraying, I enjoyed it more than I had initially. I do believe that a person shouldn’t have to scour websites to decipher a film but, at the same time, there’s something to be said about the subtlety of Enemy.

Definitely worth a watch, and certainly worth the time spent reading an explanation afterwards.
