Sicario

on

Sicario begins with an exciting, interesting, horrifying premise… and then it circles the drain for two hours.

From the very moment that she was invited to join the super-secret special operations team, I did not understand why Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) was invited. I understand that she was part of the team that discovered 42 bodies in a house, but why her?

And then I did not understand why Kate was dragged around the country and parts of Mexico by Matt (Josh Brolin) to witness random events in random places.

And then I did not understand why Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) was such a badass, or who he was working for, or why he was part of this entire operation.

And then I did not understand why I was watching a random man in Mexico eat eggs and talk to his son about soccer.

And then I did not understand why Kate meets A Random Guy (Jon Bernthal) in a bar who then tries to kill her.

And then I did not understand why this super-secret special operations team is raiding a drug tunnel in the middle of the night, nor why Kate and Reggie (Daniel Kaluuya) followed the super-secret special operations team into the tunnel.

And then I did not understand why Kate tries to stop Alejandro from taking a police cruiser and why that was supposedly something that she wasn’t supposed to see.

And then I did not understand why Kate cared so much about this super-secret special operations team following the letter of the law, or why she was almost ready to die for that ideal.

And then everything was explained and my response was, “Oh. Okay”.

In all seriousness, everyone in the film gave excellent performances. The musical score was great. The cinematography was phenomenal.

The plot… not so much.
